Initial response

Image
The suspense has been lifted - due to circumstances beyond control the response from the conservator has been some weeks on its way - but just today a very accurate and descriptive offer on how to restore frame and picture to its finest has arrived. To be sure the means measure the object - I am having thoughts on the further procedure and am pretty sure that a proper identification/valuation is needed before proceeding - how that is done......!? During the period of waiting I conducted yet another web search - found one more Gaetano source on Tutt'Art  and through this site came across a harbour picture by the artist - not the same strong coloured sails but intuitively there is a similarity in painting method.

La conservatrice

next stop conservator - yet another aimed search on the www and I selected a suitable conservator - not to far away - and to make progress in this interesting investigation the painting was delivered for a closer examination. The conservator professionally advised on some of her initial findings as to the condition of the layer of paint (my comment was, we all get wrinkles). - Furthermore pointed out the faint traces of handwriting on the back of the canvas - and then we agreed it could be useful to decipher the full meaning of the text on the note at the bottom back side. And finally the mystery of the numbers next to the signature of the painter "02-03-30" - the dilemma being if this represents the date of March 2nd, 1930 - we have a problem since the painter Gaetano Esposito left this world in the year of 1911 - thus leaving us in suspense for now.

Note from the past

Took another look at the painting today - still amazing colours and the look of something ancient - after searching the internet for information on the artist - the time had come for a closer look at the backside - however not much to see - except from the old piece of paper at the bottom of the frame backside. Well you tell me... at first sight it is possible to determin something was written a long time ago - the photo does not give much - so I guess a second look at the remains of the original writing in a different light setting will be the next step.
